Eating Smart Can Help Your Heart
Trying to eat well is one common concern among many people
. Most want to lose weight and others want to keep it off or prevent themselves from gaining in the first place. Once you know the right foods to eat, you can begin your journey to better living.
A healthy diet should always begin with a selection of natural foods. The best foods are the ones that had the least steps from nature to your plate. When you eat unprocessed fruits and veggies, you help your body get rid of free radicals that can damage your blood vessels and heart. If you want variety in your fruit lineup, think about trying some tropical fruits. Cranberries, blueberries and raspberries all have a potent mix of vitamin C, calcium, beta-carotene and more. For vegetables, consider the beta-carotene and fiber of sweet potato and asparagus. Online cooking sites can have plenty of new and exciting ideas for fruit and vegetable dishes.
I'm sure you also want to know about meat and protein. Fish, beef and poultry aren't all bad for you. Don't skip out on the protein; it's actually good for you. Be sure to look for omega-3 fatty acids. These are good fats that are abundant in fish like salmon and tuna. For good fats, consider black or kidney beans. Walnuts and almonds also have good fats in the form of plant omega-3's. Beans, fatty fish, nuts and whole grains are all important to a healthy diet because they add vital heart-protective phytonutrients.
If you think you have to skip dessert to be healthy, think again. Im sure you were waiting to hear that good news. Rich dark chocolate and a bit of red wine can be healthy. Red wine and dark chocolate have nutrients that are good for your heart and blood vessels, but with dark chocolate it's important that it has a cocoa content of 70% or more to get the best effect. With all desserts and snacks, eating them in moderation or only occasionally is the best piece of advice. You're more likely to maintain a healthy diet when you don't feel like eating a couple cookies or chips is "cheating."
Having a healthy diet is a life choice rather than some meal plan or harsh regimen. Your heart is at its best when you exercise, eat a well-rounded diet and enjoy your life to the fullest.
