Eating Your Way Through Rome

A trip to Rome offers so many attractions it would be difficult to choose just one

to focus on: history, architecture, art, culture, music, fashion, the sheer natural beauty of nature, and the charm of the Italian people. However, if theres anything everyone has in common, its a love and appreciation of great food. And, after all, this is Italy.

You wont have to travel too far from your central Rome hotel to find great examples of Italian cuisine; no other city produces as many kinds of iconic and well-beloved foods. Italian food is eaten and loved the world over; ask people what their favourite food is and chances are theyll name an Italian dish, so a trip to Rome will always delight the foodie. Listed below are some must-taste dishes to appreciate in the city and where to find them near your central Rome hotel.

Roman-style Pizza

Roman-style pizza is known for having an extra thin and crispy crust that is much lighter than the regular Naples-style one. Considering that this city is the birthplace of this dish it would be hard to name the best, especially as there are so many derivations of toppings available. Some recommended pizzerias near your central Rome hotel are Pizzeria Li Rioni, located near the Colosseum; Pizzeria Panattoni; Ai Marmi/L'Obitorio; and La Fornace and La Rustichella, both of which are located near St. Peters Square. For pizza-al-taglio, or pizza sold by the square, locals swear by Pizzarium, located near the Cipro, and Il Fornio Roscioli near Campo de' Fiori.

Coffee

For coffee lovers, theres nothing like an espresso to start the day with or to energise you for partying late into the night. If youre planning on visiting the Pantheon after leaving your central Rome hotel, youre in luck. Two of the city's most recommended espresso bars can be found on either side of the Pantheon: Sant'Estacchio and Tazza d'Oro. Be sure to buy some espresso beans to take back home because you wont find the same rich flavour anywhere but here. For those who prefer their coffee sweet, cold, and blended, the best iced cappuccino in the city is also in the areahead for the cafe Di Rienzo at the Piazza del Pantheon.

Gelato

Theres probably just as many gelaterie in the city as there are pizzerias, with every flavour under the sun available. Theres something for every taste, from the richest chocolate and crunchiest nuts to the freshest of fruit flavours. Again, it would be hard to name a single "best gelateria", but highly recommended are Gelateria I Caruso, which offers artisan gelato made on-site, and Il Gelato di Claudio Torc, which offers more than 100 crazy and creative flavors, all made from high-quality organic ingredients. If youre treating yourself during a day of sightseeing, equally as popular and delicious are Gelateria dei Gracchi, which is quite near St. Peters, and Fatamorgana, near the Vatican. It's the perfect way to end the day before heading back to your central Rome hotel and getting ready for dinner. But that's another story
