Effective Migraine Remedies
It is generally accepted that migraines are caused by the expansion of the cranial blood vessels
. A migraine headache can be very severe and debilitating to those who suffer from it, and children are not exempt. The existence of remedies that can lead to long term reduction in the incidences of migraine, is therefore very important.
There are several of these available, in the form of, prescription drugs, over-the-counter medication, as well as natural remedies.
There are several prescription medications that can be used to remedy migraine headaches. The main ones, which actually help to prevent and reduce migraine attacks, are beta-blockers and antidepressants.
The following are some natural remedies:
Herbs
In order to get relief, it is best to look for treatments that will in the long term, prevent a migraine headache from occurring. This is the case with some herbs such as Feverfew and Butterbur. Both of these have been found to be helpful in limiting the frequency of migraines.
Nutritional Supplements
Vitamin B2, also known as Riboflavin, is also an effective remedy for migraines. The results of surveys conducted, revealed that not only did the intake of Vitamin B2 cause the headache to become less intense, but, it also helped to reduce the symptoms of the disease. The incidences of nausea and vomiting were also significantly reduced. Riboflavin can be taken in the form of a supplement.
Other supplements recommended as migraine remedies are: Magnesium and Vitamin B6.
Diet
Studies have shown that certain foods can trigger a migraine attack. Being able to combat this by changes in your diet will require that you monitor your food intake and identify the foods that may be triggering your migraine. When that has been done, then avoiding those foods will greatly reduce the likelihood of an attack. The major food types identified as migraine inducers are:
- Nitrates - usually found in processed meat such as hot dogs,
- Sugary foods and alcohol,
- Tyramine - an amino acid that is found in some food such as cheese and chocolate,
- Monosodium glutamate or MSG - a sodium salt used in many processed food.
A diet rich in natural foods like fruits, vegetables and nuts, is said to be more beneficial to persons who are affected by migraines.
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
These include over the counter drugs such as aspirin and ibuprofen. They help to slow down the inflammation of blood vessels. This is a very important element because enlarged blood vessels, are thought to be an underlying cause of migraine headaches. It is because of this factor that NSAIDS are able to reduce the duration and severity of an attack, and diminish symptoms such as nausea and vomiting.
The key to deciding on the migraine remedy is to look at the available options, match those against your symptoms, and then determine what might be best for you. It might require a combination of solutions, and it might take some trial and error, but the important thing is that at the end of it all, you come away with the relief that you need.
