, all a person has to do is simply open up their mouth, and sing. This couldn't be further from the truth. There are methods that many people may use, and some singers are talented enough to make a variety of methods work for them.

First, anyone who has any vocal training knows that they should sing from their diaphragm. The diaphragm is a tiny muscle located right in the middle of the torso, right under the rib cage, but directly above the navel. The diaphragm directs the power of air that is expelled when a person exhales. To get the most power across when a person sings, and to protect their vocal cords, a singer will be taught to project their voice from their diaphragm. When a person learns how to project and sing from the diaphragm, they will make the most impact on their listeners, and they will find the power and the vocal richness of their voice. The diaphragm is a much stronger muscle than vocal chords.

Should You Sing From the Throat?

Most people tend to sing from their vocal chords. The vocal chords are located in the back of the throat. They are two lobes that vibrate when air and sound hit them. The problem with singing from the vocal chords is that many people cause damage to their vocal chords. This is because they aren't trained on how not to overstrain them. Most people don't understand the voice and vocal quality is like an instrument. A person has to be trained on how to use it properly, and on how to get the best quality sound out of it.

Some people do get intense training on how to sing effectively. Some people use the help of a vocal coach to learn to sing effectively. Some people are talented enough to train themselves to sing be listening to other effective singers. There are a few techniques that effective singers use. The point of these techniques is to not continue to use the same muscles when singing, and thus strain those muscles. The other reason to use various techniques is because using other techniques creates different sounds, and vocal qualities. Again, the voice is like an instrument, and it's always good to see how creative a person can be with their voice.

You Could Sing Nasally

A person can sing nasally. This typically doesn't produce a good sound, but some highly accomplished jazz singers use this technique. Of course, this is produced when sound is directed more so through the nasal passages, instead of the lungs. A chest voice is the equivalent of using the diaphragm. This will produce a sound that projects and gives power to the voice. The great recording divas, opera, and theatrical performers must have a great chest voice in order to project power. Anyone singing on stage needs to project power so that the whole theater can hear them. Speech level singing involves using the vocal chords more. Because of this, speech level singing isn't intended for power. It's intended for maybe the first or last verse of a song. This style again can be used by a talented jazz singer. This style invokes a mellow, introspective mood from the listener.

What method of singing to be used overall will depend on the mood and tone the song and the singer wants to convey. Every song tells a story. Learning effective singing methods will help any singer tell that story the way it should be told.
