Brian Wilson Tickets - Still Singing About Those California Girls

No matter how old he gets, Brian Wilson will forever be a Beach Boy

. The brilliant musician responsible for songs like "Surfin' Safari," "Surfin' U.S.A." and "California Girls" has led a troubled life, but recently fans have seen him back on his feet, performing the sun and surf-inspired songs of the sixties. Wilson is currently on a Greatest Hits tour throughout the U.S. and stopped in at the Pabst Theater on Saturday to give appreciative fans a dose of tunes that included "Little Deuce Coupe" and "Barbara Ann."

The baby-boomer crowd that was in attendance for the Pabst Theater show didn't seem to mind that the "singing surfer dude" on stage was 67 years old and that the sixties were but a mere memory. Nostalgia gripped the listeners as they attentively tuned in to hear ballads about chasing girls, catching waves and driving cool cars. Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys first gained notoriety after signing with Capitol Records in 1962. The band's success was due, in large part, to Wilson's songwriting capabilities. He, along with Mike Love, were largely responsible for hits like: "Surfin' Safari," "Fun, Fun, Fun," "I Get Around," "Help Me Rhonda," "California Girls" and "Good Vibrations."

Wilson became notable for all of the different roles he took on as a Beach Boy; in addition to being a singer and writer, he also became the producer for the Surfer Girl album, which was released in September 1963. Wilson also dabbled with work outside of the Beach Boys and contributed to musical endeavors with the Honeys, Sharon Marie, the Timers and the Survivors.

Brian Wilson quickly became known for his creative use of vocal harmonies as well as his lyrical style, but he also gained a less flattering reputation for rampant claims about mental illnesses and his continued use of illegal drugs.

In the early 1970s Wilson spent the better part of three years confined to his bedroom, sleeping, overeating and taking drugs. He became increasingly detached from the outside world and it became clear that he suffered from bouts of heavy depression. In later years, Wilson would be diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, and after being treated numerous times, it appears that he has made significant improvements.

Wilson did go onto pursue a solo career and that, coupled with recent stage performances featuring some of the Beach Boys' greatest tunes, has helped to keep him in the music spotlight. While times have been tough on Wilson, he's managed to turn his life around for the better on several occasions. These days he teams up with other musical artists for collaborations and spends much of his time focusing on solo work. He released a new album called That Lucky Old Sun in September 2008. Though no longer officially part of the Beach Boys' touring group, he still remains the most well-known beach boy crooner and perhaps always will be the best representation of sunny, sandy California style.
