Eggs Are Also Included In Countless Recipes

Eggs are one of the things that can be found in everyone's refrigerator shelves all over the world

. They can be cooked in a variety of ways and they are one of the basic ingredients used in baking. Eggs are also included in countless recipes. Deviled eggs are a great favorite among Americans. The interesting name makes one wonder about how deviled eggs came to be created.

Before we can even get into that, we must first look into the history of eggs themselves. There are historical records that tell of a Jungle fowl being domesticated by the people in India in as early as 3200 BC as well as in China in 1400 BC. The Romans eventually did the same thing and finally a domesticated fowl found its way to North America with a voyage by Columbus in 1493. The domesticated fowl naturally laid eggs which became a food source as well. During those early times, people not only consumed chicken eggs but also those of other fowls and even alligators.

Historians have as yet not been able to pinpoint exactly when eggs began to be used for baking although they do know that breads and cakes made with eggs were popularized by the Ancient Egyptians and Romans. Eggs were used as a thickening agent probably through trial and error. In Egypt, nobles and priests had eggs in all their dishes.

The history of deviled eggs is just as unclear as the history of eggs themselves. However, it can be said that the recipe for deviled eggs was created in Ancient Rome. The Romans called them Andalusia but the term "deviled eggs" was only coined in the 18t century. The Ancient Romans boiled the eggs and put spices on top. They used different ingredients on the eggs such as honey, pine nuts, pine kernels, celery, fish sauce, and white vinegar.

Medieval cookbooks featured eggs stuffed with ingredients which included goat cheese, raisins, mint marjoram, cinnamon, and cloves. Just imagine how the combination of all these ingredients tastes like. By the late 16th century, hard boiled eggs became extremely popular and by the 17th century hard boiled eggs became a staple in households.

The "devilling" of the eggs began in the 18th century. The egg was not the original food that was described as "devilled". The term was used to foods so hot and spicy that they were comparable to the heat in hell where the devil lives.

Recipes for deviled eggs only have slight differences but in general, all of them are pretty good. This appetizer may be simple but it does make a definite impact on the taste buds. No wonder it is still a favorite even after all these centuries.
