Egyptian Jewelry and Religion
Egyptian jewelry was often worn as a charm to benefit the wearer
. Egyptians favored gold, and many pieces of jewelry for the pharaoh or king, were made of solid gold. Some pieces for Egyptians of lesser importance would have gold leaf covering their jewelry.
Egyptians did not favor a large amount of gems. No one is exactly sure why, since gems were readily available. It is thought that the minerals used were easy to carve, since Egyptian jewelry often contains quite of bit of carving. Another thought is that the Egyptians like the colors better for their religious purposes, or they looked better with gold.
Egyptians did favor beads and wore these fairly extensively. Blues and greens were a favorite color along with deep reds. The beads were worn as a head covering, belts or as necklaces. Many beautiful combinations have been found preserved on mummies. Egyptians wore linen clothes that left the chest and shoulders bare. This area of the body was usually covered in necklaces. These necklaces became very thick row of beads to cover this large body area.
Another favorite jewelry was the ankh cross. This cross has been found throughout Egypt make of gold. This cross has to do with the renewal of life. This cross was found on necklaces and on charms. It still makes a beautiful looking pendent even today.
Nature played a role in Nile jewelry. A favorite symbol on rings and charms is the beetle. To the Egyptians this was a symbol of renewed life, since the beetles were born every year. Birds were also very important to the Egyptians. Some birds were those found along the Nile, other birds were based on the phoenix. These birds were thought to provide long life, and the renewal from the Nile.
Pharaohs wore a special amulet or cartouche, related to their godhead. Only pharaoh was allowed to enter his name in the cartouche. This cartouche protected the king from evil, and was usual as a symbol for almost anything relating to the king. Cartouches are found on rings, bracelets and necklaces.
In later years, Egyptians saw themselves as Greeks, descendants of Alexander the Great. Their dress and jewelry became formed after the Greek style. However, the components of nature and the ankh crosses remained, as did their use of gold and beads of glass and minerals.
It is this unique aspect of Egyptian jewelry that continues is popularity even today. There is not another culture that duplicates the beautiful creations of Egypt.
