El Clasico Has More History To It Than You Think.

El Classico also known as El derbi espaol, El derbi or El clssic is the coined name of a football match between Real Madrid and Barcelona

. This is a rivalry that has historical roots in the Spanish Civil War, controversy over player transfers and the status of being the best club in Spain. The political overtones of that the rivalry has caused one author, Phil Ball, the author of Morbo: The Story of Spanish Football, calls the El Clsico "a re-enactment of the Spanish Civil War".

This match is one of the most followed in the world and is only beaten by the Champions League final. Roughly hundreds of millions of people around the world watch this spectacle between two of the La Liga's Giants. But most dont know about the deep history.

Back to the early days of football in Spain the two clubs were seen as representatives of the Spanish Centralised State and Catalonia, also the two cities themselves which moved into different directions in culture. Real Madrid represented the authoritarian regimes of the first Primo de Rivera and later the Second Spanish Republic of Francisco Franco. Whilst the citizens of Barcelona were in strong opposition to the fascist state and several players enrolled with the rebel forces in 1934. The president of Barcelona was killed by Franco's security police, at the same time the president of Real Madrid, Santiago Bernabeu Yeste, was a staunch Franco supporter.

Madrid which is the capital city represents the conservative centripetal forces. Although the first socialist party was founded in Madrid, all the countrys modern ideas were introduced and made stronger via Catalonia. Also Spanish culture of art and fashion tended to take root in Barcelona rather than Madrid. FC Barcelona became more than a club because of its beliefs and figurehead like role for Catalonia. Real Madrid was considered as the establishment club despite the fact the fact that during the civil war both presidents of the respective clubs suffered at the hands of Los Nacionales.

In 1950 the rivalry sparked again when they battled for the signing of Alfredo di Stefano. He was a brilliant player who had both teams wanting his talents while he was playing for Club Deportivo Los Millonarios. Both teams had attempted to sign him during a players strike. There was confusion at this time as both had claimed he had signed for them. FIFA stepped in and stated that the player had to play for both clubs alternating between the two each season. But Barcelona's Franco-imposed President backed down after a few appearances which led to di Stefano moving to Madrid permanently. He was a key player for the team and was one of the reasons for their success in Europe. In 2005 the El Clasico at Madrid was remembered for an extraordinary thing that happened. Ronaldinho a Barcelona player got a standing ovation from the Real Madrid fans this was something that you would believe would ever expect to happen in your wildest dreams.

Over the years the rivalry has been strengthened by more transfers players such as Bernd Schuster, Michael Laudrup and Lus Figo moved from Barcelona to Real Madrid. Luis Figos first match at the Nou Camp is memorable as a pigs head was thrown at him by a Barcelonas support group. Both teams are said to have contrasting views when it comes to players who play for their team Real Madrid go for the biggest footballers in the world, the ones that sound good on a team sheet and will live in in the most luxurious Spanish Villas, they have been coined as the Galaticos while Barcelonas players have mainly come from their Cantera academy and have come from humble roots.
