History
The history of El Tesoro began with Franz Weber, who identified the Blue Agave as the agave of choice for making tequila. Don Felipe Camarena was raised in a family of tequila makers who passed on their secrets and techniques to him. He started out by growing and selling agave plants to other distillers. Then in 1937 he opened the La Altena Distillery in Jalisco, Mexico. His distillery was located near the finest blue agave and near hot springs which served as a consistent source of energy. Don Felipe passed the business on to his son, Felipe J. Camarena Orzco, who then passed it on to his daughters and to his son Carlos, who is now the Master Distiller of El Tesoro Tequila.
La Altena and the Mexican Revolution
El Tesoro is handcrafted at La Altena Distillery in Jalisco, Mexico. After 50 years of handcrafting tequila, the founding family of the El Tesoro found themselves in the middle of the Mexican Revolution. The original distillery was destroyed. It was in 1937 that Don Felipe Camarena rebuilt the distillery in La Altena, 20 miles away from the original site.
Master Distiller Carlos Camarena
The current Master Distiller of El Tesoro is Carlos Camarena. He is the third generation of Master Distillers of El Tesoro de Don Felipe Tequila and the grandson of Don Felipe. He helps to preserve the 200 years of tradition, history, and craftsmanship of El Tesoro tequila.
