Its almost a certainty to state that anyone who watched any of the Olympic opening

Electroluminescent wire or EL wire as its sometimes known, is now used to light everything from clothing to buildings, and is rapidly becoming one of the most important new materials in the world. While that may sound like a somewhat hyperbolic claim, it makes perfect sense when you understand that one of the key properties of electroluminescent wire is that it gives off light but not heat. This means that EL wire can be used for almost any application, something which has had huge impact in the world of architecture where strict fire regulations have previously made lighting design an extremely problematic undertaking. Now its possible for buildings and clothes to be covered in lights with no fire risk whatsoever, something thats been particularly beneficial in the safety industry.

Electroluminescent wire is also very environmentally friendly; because no heat is lost the wire requires relatively little energy in order to function. This not only makes it very appealing for use on large projects (where potential financial savings when compared with other lighting technology can be truly vast) but also for smaller, more mobile applications like in clothing and robotics. These myriad potential uses for electroluminescent wire also hint at another of its advantageous properties its versatility. Because the process of making EL wire is so straightforward (simply dip a wire in phosphor or any other electroluminescent material and apply a protective coating over the top) it can be applied to wires both thick and thin, long and short.

The final, and perhaps in the end the most significant, property that marks electroluminescent wire out from the crowd is its price. Thanks to the internet, and because its so simple to manufacture, its now possible to buy several metres of EL wire for less than ten pounds. Because of this low cost, EL wire has become extremely popular among the amateur electronics community, who are using it to add both improved design and increased functionality to their projects, and are among the most inventive pioneers of this relatively new technology.

So if one thing is certain, its that were going to be seeing a lot more electroluminescent wire in the future, and when we do, lets not forget to take a moment to give Capt Round the respect he is certainly due.
