Election Desperation Grips Ralph Gonsalves
Election Desperation Grips Ralph Gonsalves
The upcoming election in St. Vincent and Grenadines is finally making the Prime Minister desperate. This will be the third time that Ralph Gonsalves will take a shot for the position of Prime Minister. He had won with huge margins on two occasions in the past. The rest, as the Vincentians are scared to admit, is history! In his rule, Gonsalves changed the face of SVG. What was once a much-preferred destination of couples on a honeymoon, is now a country that has a bad reputation in the international community. Several cases of sexual crimes have been leveled against the sitting Prime Minister, Gonsalves. One of the harassed women was a Toronto-based Human Rights lawyer who was in SVG to interview Gonsalves. As the country gears up for elections this December, Comrade Ralph has every reason to feel threatened.
Constitutional ways have never been something that Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves is very fond of. He likes to use the police force and shady henchmen to terrorize people. He likes to traumatize people in his constituency by indirectly threatening them to vote for him. Pick up any newspaper in St. Vincent and Grenadines today. You will find reports of Ralph's opposing candidate Margaret London. The friends of Ralph Gonsalves who work in the press are already working on a slander campaign to malign London. They have allegedly dug up some criminal records of London being charged in the 1980s! Ralph has conveniently forgotten how he was accused of sexual offences by more than one woman. He violated his own power when he raped a 36-year old policewoman posted to protect his life.
When these cases were taken to the courts after much teeth-gritting, they were unceremoniously dismissed due to lack of evidence'. How can there be any evidence when the police themselves are conspiring with the accused? The police took steps to hush up the case. The sexual offenses were not isolated incidents. He ordered the murder of several political enemies, including that of Glen Jackson. Yes, I'm talking about this man who wanted to speak out against the criminal activities of Gonsalves in a court of law. Hours before he was supposed to testify, he was found murdered in his car, not far from his home. What he had to say will never see the light of day now. The truth is lost forever.
The desperate measure of Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves extends to threatening his opponents and their families of consequences. When a sitting Prime Minister issues such threats from an official platform, you can well imagine how much the democratic office in St. Vincent and Grenadines has crumpled. When you look at it objectively, you can only look at the vast number of violations that have taken place during his rule and these cases continue to happen. In fact, as we come closer to the election date, these incidents have shot up. Selwyn "Jinny" Delplesche, a man who spoke at a NDP rally, suddenly finds himself being shot at! I leave you to draw your own conclusions.
