It is quite a revelation to know that electric vehicles technology has been in existence for over a century

. It is another issue that the electric vehicles technology that is functional and very much in demand in todays scenario has been around only since the year 2008. This is when Tesla Roadster made its bow and though that car is no longer on the roads, the other variants that have followed it like the battery operated electric vehicles or the hybrid electric vehicles, the fuel cell electric vehicles and even the plug-in hybrid electric vehicles are all very much around and doing well.

The names mentioned above may be different but they all say the same thing. The accent is on fuel conservations, reduced emissions, lower capital and running costs. It is a fact that electric vehicles across the spectrum use much less fuel than normal combustion engines. The battery operated electric vehicles or BEVs use no gasoline at all as they get their energy solely out of the electric grid.

The hybrid varieties both the plug-in and the conventional ones do rely a bit on gasoline but use up batteries as well. The fuel cell electric vehicles like the Honda FCX Clarity use hydrogen and again are a very poor consumer of gas.

Less or practically no usage of gasoline means huge savings on running costs. In todays environment, with the accent on fuel saving, you cannot ask for a better alternative. Countries like Brazil which has adopted ethanol to run their cars have already seen the benefits of having an alternative to gasoline and any country that moves quickly to adopt electric vehicles technology would be doing a great favour to itself in cutting down on its import bill of crude oil.

Electric vehicles do not pollute the environment. Though vehicles running on gasoline are also now quite efficient in their fuel emissions, they are still far from being non polluting. As a sharp contrast, electric vehicles without a tail pipe like the Nissan Leaf EV do not pollute at all. Hybrid varieties too pollute much less and the FCEVs do not pollute at all.

Coming now to the cost of these vehicles, you will pay much more in the beginning which would include the cost of the electric battery pack. But you will recover it over the years as there are no other maintenance costs to consider. There are other incentives offered that will help bring down your acquisition cost further.

The only hitch or possible impediment in electric vehicles not becoming hugely popular is the recharging inconvenience. If this problem can be sorted out and the vehicle range of running can be extended, then you will have more and more people preferring this over conventional vehicles.
