Electronic Cigarettes Might Improve A Person Memory

Recent research conducted by Dr Lynne Dawkins reveals that electronic cigarettes

or e-cigs could actually improve one person memory as well as adding them in kicking the harmful habit.

Dr Dawkins in comment to her research said: "We were interested in exploring the effectiveness of e-cigarettes as relatively little research has been done. In terms of reducing cravings it is interesting to note the difference in effectiveness for men and women.

The data, which was conducted at the University of East London, was presented at the British Psychological Society Annual Conference in London. Dr Lynne Dawkins research involved 85 men and women who were regular smokers. They were supplied with electronic cigarettes, which either contained nicotine or a viable placebo. Additionally a small group were only asked to hold the e-cig and refrain from smoking it. The group were instructed to smoke or vape (term used for using an e-cig) for 5 minutes. Once that time period had elapsed they were given a questionnaire, which asked them to comment on their cravings and mood.

A further 20 minutes was allowed to pass and then they were asked once again to complete the same questionnaire. Moreover 75 per cent of the participating smokers were instructed to perform a memory task.

This scientific experiment revealed that an e-cigarette filled with nicotine was quite effective at decreasing cravings and bettering their moods. Additionally it showed that the nicotine e-cig was more effective with men compared to women. The nicotine e-cig and the e-cig that did not contain any nicotine resulted in similar results for women in regards to mood and cravings.

The 70 per cent who were tested for memory showed that the nicotine e-cig actually aided in improving their working memory. This was seen with both women and men.

Dr Lynne Dawkins said in comment to her findings "Perhaps more significantly, we found that e-cigarettes with nicotine help maintain working memory in smokers who have not smoked for an hour or two. People who choose to stop smoking without using a nicotine substitute may therefore suffer a period during which their working memory levels dip until their bodies adjust to the reduced levels of nicotine. E-cigarettes seem to be effective at reducing this problem for men and women. However, in this study we did not look at the issue of whether people feel self-conscious about using the devices in public."

Electronic cigarettes are small, cigarette like structures that release harmless vapour instead of harmful tobacco smoke, thus making them a healthy alternative.
