A R Rahman is a renowned Indian composer and musician. In a career that has spanned for more than two decades, Rahman has churned out numerous hit musical numbers including the internationally acclaimed song Jai Ho from the Oscar winning movie Slumdog Millioanire. The song won him two Academy Awards in 2009. He is the only Indian musician to have done so.

Early Life

A R Rahman was born to a musically affluent Mudaliar Tamil family in Chennai on the 6th of January 1966. His original name was K. S.Dillep Kuamr. His father R. K. Shekhar who was a Chennai based Malyalam film composer died when he was in his early teens. He was raised by his mother Kareema (Kashturi).

Rahman was introduced to Sufism when his younger sister fell severely sick and one of the family friends asked the family to pray at a mosque and vow to convert to Islam if the girl got well. As prayers were answered and his sister pulled through, Rahman, along with his family converted to Islam and took this new name. Rahman was 23 then.

Road to Stardom

After graduating in Western Classical music, Rahman began his own music recording and mixing studio attached to the backyard of his house. In his formative years he would compose jingles and musical scores for advertisements, television channels and documentaries.

The breakthrough for Rahman came when he was signed by renowned Tamil film director Maniratnam for his film Roja. Roja turned out to be a milestone for his career having earned him National Award for the best music director.

Roja's score became popular across the country and the songs were dubbed in many other languages as well. Rahman, within days of the release of the movie, shot to national fame.

Musical style and continuing success

With his dexterity covering different genre of music including Carnatic music, Western classical, Hindustani music and Quawalli , Rahman's songs have always been noted for bringing in a soothing freshness and elements of improvisations in Indian music .

Over the years, Rahman has given more hits than any other music director from India. Apart from films, he has also been involved in several other national and international musical projects. Recently, he composed anthem for Commonwealth Games which would take place in Delhi.
