Elvis Presley Sought Enlightenment

Elvis Presley's life and career are legendary

, and the facts and fables have been written about exhaustively: from his humble arrival into the world and extremely poor childhood in a very small wooden shotgun two-room house in Tupelo, Mississippi; to his musical beginnings as a teenaged truck driver discovered at Sun Records by Sam Phillips; to his spectacular eruption to worldwide renown launched and managed by the imposing Colonel Tom Parker. Notwithstanding this array of facts, the truth is that the most dedicated and passionate devotee who knows every song, has memorized Elvis' lines from his films and knows arcane information and particulars of his life is unaware of the most interesting and crucial insight into him: the lifeblood and root of the man born Elvis Aaron Presley, his tireless struggle for spiritual enlightenment.

Behind the public image as the King of Rock 'n Roll, the Elvis I knew was an naturally smart, intuitive man who set sail on a lifelong journey for wisdom and spiritual growth. I was privileged to share that journey with him. Elvis and I steeped ourselves in the wisdom of the world's great spiritual teachings. Elvis and I poured over every book I could get my hands on. We examined and considered, investigated and probed, always looking for answers to the unanswerable, each looking for his own purpose and helping the other along the way. Together we learned the perennial spiritual teachings , religions of both East and West, exoteric and esoteric. Nothing was off bounds for our inquiring minds. We were students of meditation and spiritual healing. We enjoyed playing with numbers and words, developing unique ways of finding mystical meaning in the ordinary. Esoteric teachings communicated directly to Elvis' core desire to understand the meaning of life, and thus it came to be naturally from the very core of his heart and soul.

Elvis' management and others around him couldn't accept or fully grasp the nature of Elvis' spiritual quest. The very concept of spiritual invoked alien, exotic and peculiar concepts and imagery to many of them. This resulted in years of misconception and contention.

The word "spiritual," just like "God," has many emotional and philosophical interpretations , disconnecting individuals from each other and bringing about significant unhappiness and strife. Those who have never focused their sight above the material world, who have never even touched the realms of the sacred, use the word as if they know what they are talking about or they dismiss the idea as if they know what they are denying. Just as with the word "love," the overall concept of spirituality has been bandied about so casually that its meaning has become buried. We love our family, we love God; but we also love our cars or ice cream. Love is more than an emotional feeling; it's a rich, powerful spiritual frequency, a unifying energy that connects everything.

Understanding our true selves is the heart of spirituality, to discover our relationship with God. This goal has been the cornerstone of all the perennial wisdom teachings, and the destination of all the great sages and saints. Spiritual is an attitude, a way of being, a heightening of our consciousness and our adventure with life; it is the art of meaningful living.

The underlying pattern of Elvis' search for meaning and purpose in his life was to figure out what was asked of him, what he was called upon to give to the world. He knew his God-given talent and the music he created were a great gift he presented to his fans, and most people in his position would have thought that's enough, that's what I'm here for. But it wasn't enough for Elvis; he sincerely felt he was chosen at birth and he suffered in his longing to do more, to give more.

The people sense that Elvis is more than the performer on stage or on records, that there was a sensitivity and innocence that shone through the flash and glamour.
