Email Marketing - Building Your Opt-In List
Email Marketing - Building Your Opt-In List
List building is important for growing your online business. Most Internet marketing experts advise that their opt-in list is the most important part of their success. So, what are good ways to start growing this list of customers and prospective customers?
Here are 5 tips to building your opt-in email list:
1. Consider Creating A Capture Page - Depending on what you are promoting, you might consider creating a capture page. This page is sometimes referred to as a landing page, sizzle page, opt-in page, or squeeze page. This page is designed to capture an individual's name and email address. If you do not have a lead capture page, you will not have a way to follow up since you do not have a name or email address of the visitor. You will not have a way to communicate to continue your marketing.
Many people will find your website from search engines. This means they are targeted and have an initial interest in your site. Some, however may quickly leave because they are out of time, they have Internet connection problems, or a whole variety of other reasons. If you have the necessary information you can follow through and contact them to further build their interest.
2. The Capture Page Should Grab Attention and Be Simple - There are different views on this but I believe in most cases it is better to keep your capture page very short and simple. It is tempting to post lots of information hoping to "sell" them on your great online opportunities. Often, however, visitors will just view this as your home page and may click away. Make it tempting to get to your home page and show them how quick and simple it is just by entering a few things on your opt-in form. Make it easy to understand, highlighting the benefits of opting in.
Often landing pages work better if you give the reader something valuable for opting in such as a report, an e-course or something else relevant to your website.
Try to arouse the visitors curiosity. Build their eagerness to receive more information from you by email or through your website.
3. Keep the Opt-in Form As Brief As Possible - The best opt-in form requests only the first name and their email address. When you request more information than that, people tend to click away. People are concerned about getting numerous telephone calls or identity theft. Depending upon the nature of your online business, you may need to request more information such as a last name or a telephone number. You may get by having this extra information as optional. Nevertheless, the less information you request the more opt-ins you will get.
Also be sure to have a clear, honest disclaimer about not renting, selling, or sharing their information. Let them know that they can unsubscribe at any time.
4. Focus On a Quality Not Quantity - Contrary to popular advice, the size of your opt-in list is not the most important goal to strive for. Your desire is to slowly build a list of targeted consumers who are looking for what you provide. Having hundreds or even thousands of people on your list that rarely open your emails or respond is not helping your online business at all.
5. Never Buy Subscribers - There are a number of online companies that will offer to sell you opt-in subscribers. Unfortunately, you'll be receiving non-targeted, disinterested subscribers who will not buy anything. Yes, you may quickly have a list, but it will be of little value. Some of these lists can be very old and people on the list have already received a huge amount of email. Very few people will even take a look at your messages.
These suggestions have been proven to work over and over again. Creating a great capture page and building an opt-in email list will help you build your online business and continue to prosper.
