Enamel Growing Gene
If your teeth enamel is no good, it is as good as having no teeth
. Enamel is the outermost layer of your teeth and it is a very hard and thin calcified layer that covers the dentin and protects the tooth.
Enamel is actually the hardest substance that is found in the human body. They are made up of calcium salts and it is the hardness of enamel that makes it possible for it to protect the softer inner portion of the teeth "" dentin. It is enamel that we use for chewing and grinding the food, if it was not so hard it would practically be impossible to chew on anything solid.
Enamel is composed mostly of minerals. The proteins that are found in enamel are also distinct and they are not found anywhere else in the body. It is the high mineral content in enamel that makes it really hard and also able to resist the attack of bacteria. There is very little in enamel that is of interest to bacteria, there is hardly any organic matter in it. Though the enamel is quite hard it is also very brittle and is therefore prone to getting chipped easily.
The color of enamel varies anywhere from yellow to grayish white. The substance is translucent and the differences in color is mostly a function of the thickness of the enamel. Typically, the thicker the enamel, the whiter the teeth.
Decay of teeth is the problem that is typically associated with weak enamel. Tooth decay is caused by bacteria in plaque interacting with the surface of the tooth. Bacteria that is found in plaque use the sugar in food and excrete a highly acidic byproduct which corrodes the enamel by breaking down the minerals and calcium. When the enamel loses minerals and calcium it begins to break down and a cavity is formed.
If the surface of the tooth has nooks and crevices they will trap more food than smooth surfaces. More trapped food means more susceptible to tooth decay. Young adults and children have softer enamel and they are more prone to attack by the bacteria.
Dental sealants are used to prevent such attacks. In addition to that, the recent enamel gene that scientists have discovered may also help the body grow better enamel. The advantage of genetic discoveries such as the enamel gene is that it will be possible to completely replace the enamel rather than just repair it. There still needs to be a lot of work done for genetic repair to come to your local dentist, nonetheless the future seems bright with many possibilities.
