What is Eneloop and what makes it different than other batteries? According to the company's website, Eneloop can be recharged almost 1,500 times and comes precharged upon purchase. The battery has an improved self-discharge also, which means you can store the battery for three years and it will retain 75% of its capacity. Last, the battery will hold up under cold temperatures, including -20 degrees.

The battery is made up of a nickel-metal hydride combination, also labeled LSD NiMH. While Sanyo developed the battery, other manufactures also offer LSD NiMH batteries. The battery is known for its shelf life due to it not losing its charge as fast as typical batteries, such as the NiMH. This reduction in self-charge is done through improving the separator and improving positive electrodes. Having a battery that works when it is needed and not having to worry about whether it has self-discharged while not being used is important for many people from all types of backgrounds. This is why folks are willing to pay a little more for this battery up front.

As for the Eneloop brand, the company has announced its universal series, which provides a power boost to a host of mobile devices, including Apple iPad, Sony's Xperia smartphone, Nintendo's DS portable gaming device and a mobile booster. The company says this battery offers double the power output of the older model and can provide up to 5V/1A higher power output for at least two hours. This battery (KBC-L2BS) also gives users the option of powering a couple of devices at the same time at a reduced output of 5V/500 via USB ports.

This little battery may be popular due to its capacity or due to the fact the company that produces it is environmentally conscious. According to studies, the amount of batteries sold in the European Union alone in just 2005 was over 180,000 tons. These batteries all end up in the earth as waste. The problem with this is the environmental problems disposed of batteries cause. Despite the fact many countries collect and recycle batteries, more than 50 percent of the world's batteries are still going into the dump.

If the environment isn't enough of a concern, maybe the idea of saving money would be helpful. Using a rechargeable battery can save you countless dollars in the long run. Especially if that battery is used in almost all of today's newest technology devices.

Last, these batteries come recharged. Sony, the Japanese makers of Eneloop likes to see itself as green. With that, they pre-charge all their batteries with solar energy. Of course when you go to recharge yours, you have to use your USB port or a AC adapter.
