Energy Efficient Replacement Windows Improve Home Comfort And Value

Older homes have a charm and character that is unequaled by most new construction

. Much of that charm is the established neighborhoods where they are found, surrounded by big shade trees that offer a feeling of belonging. Older homes do require some added maintenance and upgrading to keep them current while maintaining the architectural integrity that gives them their special appeal. One upgrade that offers both architectural and investment value is new windows.

Aging windows can look a bit shabby, diminishing the appearance of a home but the biggest problem with old windows is heat gained and lost through and around the windows. In a typical home, this lack of efficiency accounts for about 20 percent of cooling and heating costs. Heat is radiated through the glass and also is gained or lost from around the windows due to bad seals from aged weather stripping. About half of the total energy used by a home comes from cooling and heating, so replacing old window with new energy efficient windows can add up to significant savings.

Energy Star rated windows will also increase the comfort of the home. Today's windows let you keep the drapes open to let in the natural light without worrying about the added heat in the summer or cold in the winter. Because the coatings also reduce the amount of UV light allowed to pass through the glass, furnishings are protected from fading and damage.

You can be sure that your replacement windows are energy efficient by the labeling included by many manufacturers whose windows are rated by the independent National Fenestration Rating Council, or NFRC. Windows are rated on three different characteristics that determine their overall energy efficiency. The U-factor determines how well a window prevents heat loss. The solar heat gain coefficient, or SHGC, indicates how effectively the window blocks the radiant heat from sunlight. Visible transmittance measures the amount of light that is allowed through the window. Energy efficient windows will have a U-factor of 0.40 or less and a SHGC less than 0.49. The lower these ratings are the more efficient the windows.

Talk to an experienced local contractor for recommendations about the best replacement windows for your home and climate. Your contractor can help to educate you on styles as well as frame and glass options. They will also be familiar with energy efficiency programs offered by your local utility company and manufacturers rebates that can help pay for the cost of energy efficient replacement windows.
