Human civilization dates back to hundreds of centuries ago when our survival mostly depended on hunting for food

. The lifestyles of people in those times were nomadic in nature. They never settled in one place permanently. As time went on they developed the practice of farming, which meant that they did not have to move from one place to another looking for food. This new development also meant that they needed a more permanent form of accommodation to house their families. This was the beginning of engineering, even though one could classify it as a profession at the time as most of the construction that went on was done by families using very simple tools now considered primitive.

By abandoning their nomadic lifestyles, it gave necessity to the transportation of both people and farm produce. There many historical structures in Africa and other parts of the world, some which are acclaimed as some of the wonders of the world.

To cut a long story short, man has come a long from a nomadic lifestyle to a sophisticated where great things can happen in minutes. The technological advancement in the area of engineering has made it possible for the construction of complex modern structures. Such structures require strong technical skills in order to achieve the best results. Some of the applications of engineering can found in every area of lives today. Some are more direct in the way we relate to them (e.g. a residential apartment) while others may be far from our current environment (e.g. a dam).

Specific example of an engineering field is civil engineering, which is considered one the most complex branch of the broad engineering field.

Applications of this sector of engineering can found in the construction roads, railroads, airports, dams, tunnels, irrigation facilities, to mention just a few. Projects like these usually require the involvement of government departments and a huge amount of investment from taxpayers money.

The most recent project that was done in Gauteng, South Africa in the transport sector was the Gautrain, which connects Johannesburg to Pretoria. The complexity of and magnitude of investment in such projects needs a detailed level of planning from construction to maintenance in order to safeguard the investment.

Planned maintenance work is usually part of the contract agreement between the construction company and the government. In other cases, the government may contract the services of another company to help with maintenance work, especially if the kind of work does not fall within the expertise of the construction company. For example, when the tunnel of the Gautrain station needed waterproofing services, it had to seek the help of a company in that field.
