The Babylonians crushed semi-precious stones and smeared them on their lips, this was their answer for lipstick. In Egypt, iodine and bromine were used to create a purple-red shade of lipstick cosmetics. Another lipstick formula was carmine bettles crushed and then combined with ant's eggs to produce a red lipstick. Cleopatra would have used this mixture for her own personal lipstick cosmetics.

Lipstick cosmetics were a no no in the 1700's, women had to be brave to wear them because it might get them branded and executed as a witch. A law was passed in England because it was thought that women wearing cosmetics bewitched men into marriage.

Cosmetics were not worn by Victorian women, Queen Victoria did not approve of them. In Victorian times it was important for a woman to adhere to Queen Victoria's rules if she wanted to be accepted in society.

Things changed in the 1900's, as films became more popular, women started to emulate the screen stars who wore makeup in particular, dramatic lipstick shades. The top movie stars of the time were an influence on women wearing cosmetics in the 1900's. Many of the cosmetic companies that got started then are still doing business now.

Styles are constantly changing. Yet even with the improvement of ingredients and the addition of colors in almost any shade we could want, a lot of the basics remain the same.

Lipstick and other cosmetics help women achieve the look of beauty. It is not just the vanity in us, it is also the confidence that looking our best does for us. If you are short on time just apply your lipstick to give you a little oomph.
