Enjoy The Beauty Of Esfahan
Located in the central part of Iran, Esfahan is a great tourist hub in the country
, featuring masterpieces of the Persian culture. This city displays grandeur that goes all the way to the sixteenth century. Some of the things that the city is known for are its beautiful bridges and gardens.
Esfahan began its greatness during the reign of Shah Abbas I (1587-1629) who established it as his capital. He strategically located a large bazaar along the Silk Road. The capital turned into an important center for commerce, architecture and art. Esfahan was among the greatest towns in the entire country of Asia.
Unfortunately, the grandeur of the city did not last for long after the death of Abbas. The capital was relocated to Shiraz before being moved to Tehran later on. However, you will still see the dreams that Abbas had for the city from its ancient remains.
There are eleven bridges on the River Zayandeh, which are among the best attractions in the city. Six of the bridges have a particular historic touch. The Shahrestan Bridge is the oldest bridge, which dates back to the 12th century. Other important bridges are the Khaju Bridge, Chubi Bridge and Si-o-Seh.
Jameh Mosque found here is the largest mosque in the country. It has a rich historical background, which you can see from the architecture, which is a mark of the Persian culture.
The ancient Bazar-e Bozorg dates back to the sixteenth century and covers several kilometers. It begins right from Jameh Mosque up to the Imam Square. Its main entrance is known as Qeysarieh Portal, where you will see great frescoes that have been restored to have a semblance of their former glory.
You will see some of the best Islamic architecture at the Imam Square. It is also known as 'Naqsh-e Jahan', which means 'pattern of the world'. The construction of the square commenced in 1602. It is the world's second-largest square, being second to Beijing's Tiananmen Square.
One of the striking features at the Imam Mosque is the design of its mosaics, which are blue-tiled. It also features a good example of the Safavid style of architecture. The mosque has a large portal entrance that is 27 meters high. Its floral and geometric patterns are mainly designed in yellow and blue colors, showing great skill. Towering at the top of the portal are two turquoise minarets. The mosque is divided into entrance halls and sanctuaries that are decorated beautifully. The domed ceiling of the main sanctuary reaches a height of 36 meters and features deep-blue mosaics.
Shah Abbas dedicated the Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque to his father-in-law, Sheikh Lotfollah, who was a respected Islamic scholar. It has a tiled dome whose color changes as the day progresses. It is one of the most beautiful buildings in the country.
There is a beautiful garden surrounding the Chehel Sotun Palace, which Shah Abbas built as his pleasure palace. Fire consumed the building in 1706 but it was re-built. There are frescoes in the Great Hall that display the Savavid triumphs.
