Enjoy a Scots wah-hae but don't get weighed down by your luggage
When there's a celebration in the offing, the cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow know how to do it better than most
. Both are easy to get to from nearly all parts of England, especially by train and plane, with competition among airlines and train operators resulting in some excellent fare bargains being available.
And once in Glasgow or Edinburgh, there's no need to worry about the currency or the language well, mostly. The country's two principal cities revel in a party-loving reputation which extends to all year round, and certainly not just at Hogmanay. Long before licensing hours were liberalised in England and Wales, Scots enjoyed long permitted bar opening times, especially at weekends, which led to large numbers of English people regularly joining the exodus across the border.
Now, though, both Glasgow and Edinburgh are keen to project themselves as international cities, with rich cultural heritages and pleasant countryside easily accessed from both. They have excellent transport networks which makes getting around easy too. However, it's no fun carrying large cases or rucksacks on busy commuter or suburban bus or train journeys, so it's well worth finding some way of offloading non-essential items before heading out.
And that's where left luggage facilities come in. Available at both Edinburgh Waverley and Glasgow Central stations the main points of arrival for visitors by train, and very handily situated for each city's main attractions they allow visitors to offload their non-essential items, and explore at their leisure.
Long opening hours mean items can be deposited immediately on arrival in the city, and convenient flat daily storage rates ensure that visitors know how much they will have to pay to lighten their load. It can certainly work out much more economical than having to pay excess luggage charges on a domestic airline.
Culture, sport, entertainment and history both Edinburgh and Glasgow have them in abundance, and with those bargain rail and air fares, sampling everything that they have to offer makes for a great value weekend or extended break. Add in the convenience of being able to deposit non-essential luggage items in a safe and secure city centre location, and Scotland becomes an enjoyable celebration destination for any occasion or even when no excuse is needed for a getaway.
Making a beeline for
Glasgow left luggage facilities or
left luggage Edinburgh offices means visitors can benefit from having a lighter load and a more enjoyable time.
