Enjoying Thai Theatre under the Stars

Asia has always been a place of wonder for many travellers

Thailand is a hotbed of culture in the South East Asian region owing partly to its religiousness and spirituality, and partly to the austere discipline with which performers engage in the traditional arts.

One such example of unique Thai culture is its traditional theatrical performances. Thai theatre is similar to Chinese and Japanese stage performances in its highly stylized movements, elaborate make up and costumes, but the substance for the storylines differentiates the genre from the rest. A popular subject for plays in Thailand is the Ramakien, which is a national epic and is derived from the Indian Ramayana.

For tourists that wish to experience the magic of Thai theatre in Bangkok, the Patravadi Theatre located centrally in the city is an excellent place to visit. Apart from being a place to showcase traditional art and culture, the Patravedi Theatre also serves as a training centre for young aspiring artistes.

The history of the theatre is not a glamorous one; initially it was a school that was built to serve the community on the banks of the Chao Phraya River. Because of interest in reviving the indigenous arts, it was converted into a theatre. Usually the performances are staged in an ornate Thai garden that can seat up to 450 people. These open-air performances are extremely popular among locals and tourists alike, so rest assured that there is always a clamour for tickets!
