Epilepsy Symptoms And Cure
In epilepsy, there is a sudden transitory disturbance in brain
, leading to sudden generalized convulsions of the whole body, involving all the four limbs, including the face, all at once (i.e. disturbance in motor function of the brain), called generalized/major/grand mal epilepsy. Or, there is convulsion of a part of the body, e.g. one of the limbs, or a part of the limb, say an arm, hand, foot, etc., or muscles of the face/ eye only. In some cases, however, these convulsions may spread first on the same side of the body, followed by similar symptoms on the other half of the body.
Types:
Temporal lobe epileps
This kind of epilepsy is categorized as either simple or complex partial seizures. In simple partial seizures, the patient is aware of the self and the environment but experiences other symptoms involving, for example, the olfactory senses. On the other hand, patients with complex partial seizures become disabled. They become unaware of others and appear to be staring into space.
Epileptic seizures can be quite scary for the rest of the public. Seizures can result in numbness, dizziness, and plucking clothes, smacking lips, swallowing and wandering around. Atonic seizures lead to a fall due to unexpected loss of muscle control; strong jerks to the body and at times even loss of consciousness are involved in myoclonic seizures and the most dreadful Tonic- clonic seizures result in an unconscious and stiffened body and loss of oxygen due to irregular breathing.
Conclusive medical research indicates that epilepsy is not contagious. It is not caused by mental illness or retardation. Most people suffering from epilepsy have a normal or above average intelligence. A majority of patients are able to lead normal lives. Epilepsy cannot be completely cured.
Epilepsy seizures
There are two types of seizure, partial and generalized. Partial seizures begin in a local area of the brain. In the simple partial seizures consciousness is not impaired but there are specific symptoms depending which part of the brain has been affected.
The symptoms of absence seizure include staring, brief body jerks, mainly involving arms and brief loss of attention and activity. Patients are described as being " zoned out." The symptoms of a simple partial seizure include jerking of one part of the body like a hand or foot. The patient begins to panic for no reason and keeps blinking the eyes. In some cases of this kind, the patients' face twitches, and they sense a change in the way things taste, smell or look.
In a small number of cases the implantation of the stimulator in the indistinct nerve or a exacting diet may be useful. The neurosurgical operations of the epilepsy can be soothing, which trim down the occurrence or harshness of the seizures and in a number of patients the operation could be healing. Medications are well prescribed to take every day.
