Epoxy is one those modern day chemicals that finds application in various industries

. They were originally developed for use in the aerospace industry, however because of the versatile properties that this compound offers, has made it a favorite for a number of manufacturing industries.

If we have a look at the chemical nature of the compound, then epoxy can be termed as a copolymer that is made from the combination of two different chemicals - the resin and the hardener. Hardener is generally a monomer of polyamine like TETA (triethylenetetraamine) whereas the resinous chemical is a short chain polymer that contains epoxide group at both ends.

The lower volatility & water cleanup properties of the compound have led to its application in factory cast iron and aluminum.

As a Composite in industrial tooling: Although epoxies are a little costly as compared to other resins used in the manufacturing of industrial tools, but their strength and high temperature resistance overcomes the cost factor. The resin is used to create molds, laminates and fixtures to be used for various industrial purposes.

Others: Apart from the above-mentioned industries, this multipurpose chemical is also finds application in marine and aerospace industry. It is also used in biological applications like embedding the samples in the plastic that can be then imaged under electron microscope. Artists use epoxy as a painting medium by missing the chemical with any colored pigment.
