Ergo Baby Carriers
I was introduced to the Ergo baby carrier when my second child was a year old
. He was used to being carried around in a sling, but easily adapted to the backpack carrier. I was surprised at how comfortable the carrier was. It spread my son's weight across my back and hips so I didn't feel strained when carrying him. I mostly used the baby carrier for shopping trips, but would occasionally put my son in there for his nap. I didn't try to figure out how to put my baby in the carrier by himself though so I only used it when my husband was around to help.
When my daughter was young I pulled my Ergo carrier out and she found it comfortable. I started to put her in there for her nap times and she would drift off to sleep as I went about my day. Since my husband was gone during the day for work and my daughter did really well at sleeping in the Ergo carrier I decided to learn how to put her in the carrier on my own. The Ergo carrier came with great instructions so it wasn't too hard to know what to do. However, practice was necessary. I put on the Ergo carrier belt and one strap then put the baby on my hip. I then shifted my baby to my back and guided her leg into the correct spot with my hands. Now I don't have three hands so the only way I could get this to work was to hold the strap with my mouth. Once her leg was threaded through the correct spot in the Ergo carrier I pulled on the other strap and fastened the front closed. I then pulled on the straps for the sleeping hood to make sure she was all the way in the carrier. It took several days to get the hang of it. Once I got the hang of it and the baby knew what was going on things went smoothly. Now I can put her in the backpack carrier whenever and wherever I want. If you get to that point be prepared for strangers to give you astonished looks as they watch you get your baby in the carrier. Or you may offer help on more than one occasion.
My daughter is close to age two now and we still use the Ergo carrier daily. I put her in the carrier after lunch and she goes to sleep. The Ergo carrier is also great to use while shopping. My daughter can get a good view of everything and she can avoid germ-ridden shopping carts. Just don't walk down narrow aisles and forget there are little hands reaching out to explore behind you. I learned the hard way on that one.
Now the Ergo carrier is not just a backpack carrier, it can be used with young infants with a separate infant insert. You can also use it as a front carrier or a hip carrier. No need to worry about carrying a bag either because you can get a matching backpack that straps right to the carrier.
The Ergo carrier is definitely a must have in our household. ThanksMama.com has a huge assortment of Ergo carriers. I have a simple black and brown one, but there are versions with patterns and designs on them. Hmm...Maybe I should get another one.
