Escape to San Francisco

With a vast bay area to the north and east, and the Pacific Ocean to the west

, San Francisco is a scintillating city that combines a distinct urban buzz with that of a coastal seaside town to create a truly unique conurbation.

With a population of less than a million, San Francisco doesn't have the same frantic 24-hour buzz as the likes of New York, but that's no bad thing. And in a city that gave the world everything from Dirty Harry to Flower Power, San Francisco has its own unique history, culture and way of life that can't be found anywhere else in the USA.

First up is classic San Francisco the sights everyone has seen through TV and movies over the years. Much like New York, San Francisco has countless iconic attractions, and top of the list has to be Alcatraz.

Alcatraz was immortalised in Clint Eastwood's classic Escape from Alcatraz' movie, a true story based on former inmate Frank Morris, who is one of the few people ever to escape from the prison on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay. The prison operated between 1934 and 1963 and offers a fantastic insight into life in one of America's most notorious jails.

And if you're a bit of a hippy at heart, then the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco is a short tram journey away from Downtown. The first seed of the Flower Power movement can be traced to a very specific house in this area, where Janis Joplin lived in the early 1960s.

Nearby is the fantastic Golden Gate Park, which is a great place to while away an afternoon, walking, cycling or lounging around in the summer sun. And one of the main highlights is a short walk north from this park, through Inner Richmond and passing through the Presidio of San Francisco onto the iconic Golden Gate Bridge.

A good way to see the bridge is by pedal power! Many outlets in the city hire out bikes by the hour or the day, and cycling the vast Golden Gate Bridge to the magnificent vantage point on the northern side of the bay is highly recommended.

Twenty seven miles west of the Golden Gate Bridge is the Farallon Islands, an often overlooked highlight of San Francisco which is one of sixty six national Wildlife Refuges. The main highlight here is the population of Great White Sharks that descend to feed on the seals by the islands each year, offering a great chance to see one of nature's greatest predators up close...but not too close!

San Francisco is a great place to visit at any time of year, and with so much to do, hotels in San Francisco are naturally always in great demand. So book ahead if you can and then prepare to be blown away by a truly unique city.
