Essential Dorm Room Supplies for Campus Living
Essential Dorm Room Supplies for Campus Living
In addition to the basic items needed for college living, i.e. linens, school supplies, clothing, etc., there are handful of essential dorm room supplies that will make the best of your small living space. Keep things neat and organized with the following.
Portable Storage Cart
A portable storage cart on wheels with drawers, pockets, or shelves is a great place to store small-to-medium sized items in your dorm room. Instead of piling your desk and dresser high full of stuff or jamming things in drawers, these carts give you an easily-accessible place for everything. They take up very little floor space and can be easily moved. Keep one in your closet or purchase one with a solid top and use it as a side table. The cart can hold all sorts of items such as small electronics, school supplies, toiletries, shoes, clothing, linen, food items, cleaning supplies, and more.
Pop-Up Hamper
Pop-up hampers are ideal for the dorm room. Perhaps you have used a laundry basket as your hamper in the past; but you will find that a pop-up hamper is much more functional. Not only does it serve as a hamper and a laundry basket at once, but it takes up less floor space while at the same time holding more clothing than a traditional laundry basket. The mesh material provides great air circulation for dirty or damp clothing. Use the hamper to pack items you will need for college or simply fold it up and pack it with everything else.
Shower Tote
There are a variety of shower totes available to help you carry your shower essentials to and from the dorm showers. The ones that are most functional are those that hang. This feature allows you to keep the tote clean and dry by hanging it on a hook instead of placing it on a wet, dirty floor. The pop-up versions also allow it to stand tall if a hook is not available. The mesh fabric works best for quick drying after use.
Small Book Shelf
You might be surprised at how versatile a small book shelf can be in your dorm room. To make the most of the tight space, you will want to think "up." A small book shelf can be placed on a dresser or desk top and give you a significant amount of extra storage space. Many portable book shelves fold up for easy transport. If you can get the measurements of the dorm desk and dresser tops ahead of time, you can be sure the shelf will fit in this configuration. Make sure the shelf is sturdy and avoid using it to store heavy items. If you find the shelf just doesn't work for you in this position and you can find floor space for it, use it as a shoe holder in your closet, a linen shelf, a side table, or even a place to hold small appliances.
With these dorm room essentials, you'll be able to keep your dorm room as organized as possible by having a place to store everything you need.
