Essential Preparation For Your Plans To Build A Chicken Coop
If you want to grow poultry at your house or anywhere else
, always be prepared. Your preparation will include setting up a home for the chickens. You can either buy a portable chicken coop or build a permanent one. If you have plans to build a chicken coop, be certain you know how to. There are things you need to know if you want to build a chicken coop.
The first thing you do when you build permanent chicken coop is count your chickens. Counting the number will help you determine the total population. Getting the population will give you idea of what size of chicken coop you need. If you will raise a large number of chickens, you need to build large coops. If you've got a small poultry then you will only need a small chicken coop.
Chickens will not be able to grow well and healthy in a congested coop. Chickens need to be able to roam around freely and unharmed. Accidents usually happen when there are too many chickens placed in the chicken coop. Some will not have enough air and others will be deprived of food and water.
Next thing to check is the location where you will build the chicken coop. Check the safety of the surroundings. Always remember that there are lots of predators waiting in the corner to devour your poultry. Watch out for predator birds, snakes, large rats (they eat small chicks), etc. These animals are capable of emptying your chicken coop fast leaving you nothing.
The location for your chicken coop should also be clean and well ventilated. An unclean surrounding is a good site for disease spread among your poultry. Bacteria loves to breed in dirty environment and they easily spread fast causing diseases. Aside from cleanliness, ventilation is also important so that the chickens will have enough air. Having no enough air can suffocate the chickens and kill them in no time.
Another thing to consider in building a chicken coop is the weather. You need the right materials according to the usual weather of the environment. If your location is always warm then ensure that your chicken coop allows air entrance. If you are in an area that is always cold then choose thick building materials. You will also have to keep the area dry especially in winter.
One more thing to consider in growing poultry is the number of the chicken coops. If you are planning to buy small chicks and large hens, they need to be separated. You cannot mix the younger chickens with the large and old chicken. Therefore, build 2 or more chicken coops as necessary to separate you chickens.
After you are done with building the chicken coops, place the chicken's food containers inside. Be sure that there is sufficient number of water containers to sustain the chicken's needs. Refill the containers with water always so that chickens will not die of thirst. Do not place only one food plate because some chicken cannot get their share.
All the things above are essential to your plans to build a chicken coop. There are still some other things you can add to improve poultry care. Always make sure that the chickens adapt to their environment. That way, they can grow healthy without giving you any problems.
