Estepona - Getting Away From It All
Esteponas microclimate is due to its location at the foot of the Sierra Bermeja mountain
. Standing at almost 1,500 metres above sea level, and only ten km from the coast, the mountain dominates the landscape. To reach the summit, its a 30-minute drive or a half-day hike. Either way, you will be rewarded with the most spectacular views of the area, over the Costa del Sol, the Straits of Gibraltar and northern Africa. Turn away from the sea and the landscape inland is dotted with whitewashed farmhouses
The Country Park
Nearby is the country park, Los Pedregales. This fascinating and peaceful area covers 18 hectares and is home to a startling array of fauna and wildlife. Situated just 4km from Estepona, this is the perfect place to wander along the winding paths, past rocky outcrops and to stop at one of the many viewing points to gaze down at the sea. The park has picnic and barbecue areas for those who want to make a day of it, childrens play areas and paddling pools, and bars for much-needed refreshment. It is even possible to rent a log cabin in the park.
The Wildlife Park
You dont need to go to Africa to go on safari. Just visit Selwo Adventure Park to see hippos, lions, tigers and elephants. The fascinating botanical gardens are near the entrance and offer a bewildering range of plants and beautiful gardens. There is wildlife here, too, including the bird canyon, a huge netted arena where birds can fly freely.
There are two routes taken by the safari trucks. The valley route takes visitors past bears, lions and tigers to a vantage point from where Africa is visible. The second route, the Sabana, gives visitors the chance to see antelope, rhinos and elephants roaming freely.
Walking and Riding
The area around Estepona is ideal for country pursuits. You can choose from a variety of designated walks, both relaxing and strenuous, all the while marvelling at the unspoilt countryside. For the more adventurous, there are many guided walks available with experienced guides to take you off the beaten track to discover hidden areas of the landscape. The local equestrian centre is acknowledged as the best in Spain. Multilingual instructors are on hand to guide novices. Its a superb way to explore the landscape and marvel at the scenery from the back of a horse.
On the Water
There are many opportunities for enjoyment on the Mediterranean and the Straits of Gibraltar. Boats can be hired by the hour or for the day at Estepona Marina, and from here you can choose from a short trip around the bay, or a longer cruise through the straits to Gibraltar or even the coast of Africa. Jet ski hire is also available, and after a strenuous hour or so flying across the surface of the water, there can be nothing better than a drink or a meal at one of the lovely tapas bars which surround the marina.
