The movie is directed by Michel Gondry, the French director and screenwriter, who did the screenplay for this movie along with Charlie Kaufman, who previously wrote the acclaimed Adaption. with Donald Kaufman, which got an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay along with nominations for its cast. Pierre Bismuth also did the screenplay writing for this movie. It is produced by Anthony Bregman and Steve Golin. It was distributed by Focus Features and was released on March 19, 2004 in the United States. It had a budget of $20 million and earned $72,258,126 in gross revenue. It has 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 217 reviews and 8.5 star rating on IMDb.

It stars Jim Carrey as Joel Barish and Kate Winslet as Clementine Kruczynski as lead characters along with Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood and Tom Wilkinson. The movie was nominated for many awards, including two Academy Awards, one for Best Actress in a Leading Role and the other for Best Original Screenplay, for which it won. Many of the critics term it as the best movie of the decade, and so it has a universal acclaim as well as a cult following. Roger Ebert included this movie in his "Great Movies" series. The Premiere magazine included Kate Winslet's performance at #81 as 100 Greatest Performances of All Time. Kate Winslet lost her Oscar to Hilary Swank for her performance as Maggie Fitzgerald in Million Dollar Baby.
