You Can Count On Me (2000)

This movie is considered a breakthrough movie for Mark Ruffalo for which he got much recognition, applause and nominations for awards, winning two at the end. The movie is also an important one for his co-star Laura Linney, who also got much praise and an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, but lost it to Julia Roberts for her performance in Erin Brockovich. The film was also nominated for the Best Original Screenplay, besides nominations for other awards ceremonies. The film is a directorial debut of Kenneth Lonergan who also wrote it. He earlier wrote stories and did the screenplay of Analyze This (1999), starring Robert De Niro and Billy Crystal. The film was produced by Martin Scorsese amongst others with a budget of around $1.2 million and distributed through Paramounts Classics releasing on November 12, 2000 in the United States. It earned gross revenue of around $11,009,079. It has 95% ratings on Rotten Tomatoes based on 97 reviews and has 7.7 star rating on IMDb. The film also stars Matthew Broderick, Jon Tenney, and Ron Culkin.

In the drama movie, Mark plays the younger brother, Terry Prescott, to Laura's character of Samantha Prescott, who have lost their parents in a car accident. It tells how her character struggles with her difficulty in managing relationships with her family and friends, who is also a single mother living in a small fictionalized town of Scottsville and Auburn in New York. Much of what one expects this movie to be it is not. Even though that it is a low budget film, but yes, unexpected and in a pleasantly surprising way, it is a great movie to watch and admire. With a heart-touching story that has with it the moral lessons to learn and see from. It gives an insightful understanding into what relationship could be and what importance does a family have over one's own personal life and its situations. The movie is a riveting watch and will not disappoint now that it has gained much fame and acclaim it so rightly deserves. Go watch with your family, friends and your loved ones and have a memorable time to recall back later on in life.
