Ethernet Cable - The Basics

The internet has become an integral part of our lives in a very short span of time

. Today, many of us can't imagine life without it and our children don't even remember a time when they couldn't log on to the web for games, social interaction, and information. But while nearly all of us utilise the internet on a regular basis, we often overlook the various components that allow us to do so until we need to deal with an issue. While your computer, modem, and router are all important for connectivity, they're nothing without a good Ethernet cable to facilitate the signal transfer.

An Ethernet cable is generally a Cat-5 or Cat-6 cable, depending upon the specific application. These are twisted pair unshielded cables that deliver the signals and resemble telephone cables in appearance and even in function to some degree. You'll find that these cables are used for a variety of tasks including connecting computers to the internet, for home or office networks, and even for connecting peripherals like printers or other devices to your system. They're even used to connect modern video game systems to your network to facilitate online play. In other words, if it's part of your network or hooked to the internet, it's probably relying on these cables.

Colour is not really important, many modem manufacturers will supply a red Ethernet cable, but there is no difference between this and a yellow or green Ethernet cable.

Cat-5 cables are the lower quality version of an Ethernet cable, but for most homes or small office setups they'll be more than sufficient. The next step up from those is Cat-5e cables which provide better signal strength and less degradation. Cat-6 cables are the top of the line version at the moment, and cost more than double what a Cat-5 cable would cost. But they allow faster transfer speeds and longer distances of cable to be run. Using lower quality cables is only an option if you have a very small amount of distance to cover.

There are various ways to purchase an Ethernet cable. Most people will end up buying a single cable in a specified length, from one metre and beyond. Those about to start major installations of networks may be better served to buy the cable in bulk rolls. This option can save huge amounts of money, but you'll have to have the tools and ends needed to cut the cable and attach the needed connector pins to either end. Weigh your options and your needs and you'll be sure to purchase the cable that's right for you.
