Who Can Get Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery, or the technical term blepharoplasty, is meant for men or women in good health. Eyelid surgery candidates need to have supple skin and be free of any serious eye disease. Be sure and let your plastic surgeon aware of any medication you take or any health issues that you have. Typically, those who receive eyelid surgery are over the age of 35.

What Is The Procedure?

If you are considering eyelid surgery, you must first choose a plastic surgeon and have a consultation. You may also want to check with your insurance company to see if they will cover any part of your procedure. Typically, insurance companies do not cover cosmetic procedures. However, many plastic surgery offices provide their own financing options. You will want to get your financing worked out prior to your surgery.

The procedure itself is done by removing excess fat and tissue under the skin and then removing any excess skin. For surgery on the upper eyelids the incisions are made in the creases of the eyelid. For procedures on the lower eyelids, incisions are made along the lash line. In both cases, the incisions are small and are closed with very fine stitches so any scars will be difficult to see. Eyelid surgery can take from one to two hours in an outpatient clinic or in your surgeons office. During your consultation, you will discuss with your surgeon what type of anesthesia will work best for you and your exact procedure.

After the surgery, it is very important to follow your surgeons care instructions. You may be given ointment or eye drops to put in your eyes and your surgeon will tell you the best way to clean the area around your eyes. If necessary, your stitches will be removed in three to five days. Swelling and bruising may last a week or two and your eyes may feel itchy for a couple of weeks.

As with any procedure there are risks involved such as infection, dry eyes or bleeding. However, complications with eyelid surgery are rare. Again, your surgeon will discuss the risks with you at the time of your consultation visit.

The results of eyelid surgery are permanent, but you must continue to take good care of your eyes and the skin around them.
