Ever Feel Frustrated With Your Guitar Solos? The Solution Is Easier Than You Think

Do you ever think to yourself: "My guitar solos sound ok

, but they remind me of a lot of other solos I've already listened to." It is very common for guitarists to imitate other guitar players styles at a subconscious level. If you currently do this in your own guitar playing, then you know how frustrating it can be when you try to think of new ideas for your soloing, but continue reverting to the same old phrases that you have played thousands of times. Surprisingly, the stylistic influence of other guitar players is not the entire reason why your guitar solos follow the same patterns.

Guitar players tend to play solos that sound alike to one another as a result of continually choosing the same process for creating their guitar solos.

The majority of guitar players approach their guitar solos by listening to the chords or riffs they are supposed to play over, and then improvise some melodies until something feels right. This process continues until the guitar solo is complete.

Although you can come up with some cool guitar solos by using this approach, the problem you will often run into is that your guitar licks will often sound very similar to those of your favorite guitar players (as well as your own past guitar solos). This is the result of using the identical guitar solo framework to what the majority of guitar players use.

To illustrate a point let's use a very well known guitar player: Yngwie Malmsteen. Yngwie is known worldwide as one of the best solo guitar players. Most of the time his guitar soloing has the same consistent sound due to the method he uses to make his solos. Now, Yngwie has been playing guitar at a high level for many years and is obviously satisfied with the way he plays, so the fact that his solos are similar is not an issue (for him and for many of his fans like myself). With that said, if you are not satisfied with how YOUR guitar solos sound, then you obviously do have an issue that must be resolved.

So what is a good way to solve this issue? I will now tell you one of the methods that I have found to work with great success.

You are going to make your guitar soloing center around a melody sung by your favorite singer. There are several ways to use this idea on guitar. I'm going to talk about one way right now (and show it to you on video as well).

Step One: Select a great vocal melody from any song by your favorite singer.

Step Two: Using your guitar, play the melody (from the step above). Spend some time to really understand how the vocal melody works. Articulate the specific style that the singer uses as closely as you can (don't simply 'play the same pitches').

Step Three: Figure out the strongest notes which make up the vocal line, and remember these notes. Take out a pencil and write these notes on a piece of paper. You can also use tab, or (if you are comfortable with it) staff paper.

Step Four: Cut out all of the rest of the pitches.

Step Five: Write a guitar solo by using the melodic notes from Step Three as your framework. This means that the notes of the vocal melody should guide the direction of your solo while you are free to insert any licks and guitar phrases in between the vocal melody that fill out the melodic foundation to create a complete guitar solo.

You will get much more consistent at playing unique melodic guitar solos as you practice. Before you know it, your guitar solos will have stopped sounding like all the other solos you've already heard, and begun to take on their own distinct sound.
