Everything You Need To Know About Antifreeze
There are a few liquids in your car that you might not know anything about
. Well, there are probably a lot of things that you don't know about your car; however, you should know at least the basics about it in case the need ever arises. Antifreeze is one thing about your car that you might have never thought about before, or that is until you needed to because your car wouldn't start on a cold day. Finding out that you needed antifreeze is a hard thing to do in hindsight because that means your car probably didn't start when you needed it to.
What is Antifreeze?
Antifreeze is a liquid made up of chemicals that will not allow the other fluids in your car to freeze or gather pockets of water that could freeze. Antifreeze is poured into radiators through a funnel so that it doesn't spill everywhere around the engine. The antifreeze is meant to keep things from freezing up, and it also works in the reverse. It keeps the liquids and the water from boiling. So even though it is called antifreeze, it is also known as the engine coolant for the car.
Antifreeze is also a lubricant for the moving parts in the engine. It works in and around the water pump to prevent freezing of water particles, but it also helps the pump to operate more efficiently. The compound is made up of many things that make it a smooth liquid that will not lock up or let the other fluids in the engine lock up. When there is a leak in the antifreeze, your car is at risk of locking up, no matter what time of the year it is.
Antifreeze is usually red or green when it is put into the engine. Antifreeze is a chemical, but it is one that has a sweet taste to it. It is dangerous to pets, because if there is an antifreeze leak in the garage and they happen to lick it up, it can be potentially fatal to them. That is why checking for leaks and storing any containers of antifreeze in a secure location is very important. It might look like a fun and colorful liquid to children, but it won't have the same sweet flavor to them as it would to a cat or a dog.
Types of Antifreeze
There are three kinds of antifreeze available. There is the traditional kind, which is a 50/50 mix of ethylene glycol and water. Different brands will have a formula that varies slightly from this, but it is pretty standard. If you do have pets or young children around, you might want to purchase a mix that is considered to be low toxic. It would still be dangerous to drink in any quantity, but a sniff or two won't be fatal. The low toxic mixture is a propylene glycol based and will work just as well as any other type of product that you can put into your engine. If you have any questions as to the type of antifreeze that is in your car and you didn't put it there, make a phone call. The mechanic who services your car will be able to answer your questions.
