Evolving Ems Lights

EMS, or emergency medical services, is services designed to take care of medical emergencies

. The very summoning of EMS means that somebody is in need of dire help and this makes EMS lights extremely important. Emergency medical services may often treat the patient on the spot, or give at least first aid, or at times transport a medical expert to the patient since even a minute's delay could sometimes swing the pendulum either way.

The most visual representatives of emergency medical services are ambulances and these are the vehicles of which EMS lights are predominantly used. Besides that, those units involved in search and rescue operations, extrication from accident sites, or water rescue operations may also have EMS lights on their vehicles.

Ambulances are allowed to use EMS lights practically all over the world, even if the person driving it has no medical background at all. Though ambulances are generally motor vehicles, air ambulances are also used for patient transportation from remote areas. Nurses, doctors, paramedics, emergency medical technicians etc. are allowed to use EMS lights on their vehicles, though the rules regarding this use varies from country to country, and state to state.

Though EMS lights are generally red and white in many states, the lights sported by volunteer EMTs may vary a lot. In some states volunteer EMTs use blue lights on their vehicles which is a more common color, while in some states they need to use green lights to demarcate them differently from police, firefighters, or official EMS services.

Most states, however, allow even volunteer EMTs to sport some form of EMS lights.

In New York volunteer EMTs sport a green light but they have a right to use red lights and even sirens so far as they are "transporting emergency medical personnel and equipment to sick and injured persons." The permission to use EMS lights are very helpful to those involved in providing different types of emergency medical aid but the varying state laws sometimes create complications when they cross borders.

Halogen, strobe, and the now ubiquitous light emitting diodes, or LED, technology is the one used in EMS lights as well, and manufacturers offer these technologies in various combinations to cater to the market need. LED has made the lights more energy efficient so that the burden on the battery is substantially decreased. The color use of EMS lights will be decided by the state in which the vehicle is operating. However, colors can be electronically controlled in LED so that users can opt to have additional colors also on their vehicles to be used when they cross state boundaries.

EMS lights are available for both permanent and temporary mounting. Permanent mounting may require drilling and screwing, while temporary mounting is done with adhesive pads, magnets, or suction cups. The lights may be of standard sizes or can be custom fitted on a vehicle. Alternatively, EMS lights come with customized racks and rack fitting brackets. Even in mounting brackets there are so many options like light fitting plates, cross brackets, tight brackets etc.
