Exchanging Stockings For Socks
Today whenever you first think about nurses uniforms you probably dont think of a
traditional white dress, stockings, and a nurses cap, like you would see at a costume shop. Most people picture a nurse wearing a pair of scrubs for their uniforms. Nursing uniforms have come a long way from the traditional dress uniform to the modern day scrub uniform that nurses wear now. Socks have always been more comfortable than stockings and much easier to work in.
The very first nurses uniforms were very similar to a nuns habit because nuns were the ones who originally attended to those who were sick. The original uniform consisted of a dress with an apron and a cap. Nurses would wear stockings because it was not acceptable to have bare legs. The shoes were often uncomfortable, though somewhat practical. This nurses uniform was what nurses wore for quite some time and only a few minor changes actually occurred over the course of time up until about 20 years ago as nursing scrubs grew much more popular (and practical) than the traditional uniform. There were many reasons included the following:
* Scrubs are no longer something that is only seen in the operating room and come in many more colors than the green ones that were seen in the operating room
* Scrubs have become popular outside of the operating room because they are lot easier to clean
* Scrubs are more comfortable and practical to wear
* Scrubs are now being worn by almost everyone in the medical profession including dentists, pediatricians, surgeons, and even in the animal medical field by veterinarians, so there is more options available
While everyone within the medical profession generally accepts scrubs, there are some people who dont like wearing them and others who grow tired of wearing the same thing everyday. Many of the people who dislike wearing scrubs say that they feel like they are wearing their pajamas to work or may feel as though their patients have a difficult time recognizing them from the housekeeping staff. However, most nurses really appreciate just how comfortable scrubs are. It took hard work to dislodge the stereotypes that once were generated by the traditional nurses uniform. There are medical workers in other countries that still wear the traditional nurses uniform dress, but it is not common. Now that there are a lot of male nurses, who would obviously refuse to wear the traditional uniform dress, it is not likely it will have a comeback!
A few generations ago, nursing scrubs were boring and came in limited number of styles, which were all very unflattering. Now nursing scrubs even come in micro silk and in well-known brands like Cherokee and Baby Phat. Todays nursing scrubs are easy care, breathable, and come in a variety designs, styles, colors, and sizes.
Regardless of how you may feel about the issue of medical uniforms and nursing scrubs, it really comes down to what your own personal style is like, which may or may not match the dress code for the company you work for. It may also depend a lot upon what generation you are a part of. Today, the traditional nurses uniform seems to be impractical and also can interfere with professionally performing job duties, where the nursing scrub is much more practical. No matter what nurses are wearing, they deserve a lot of respect and appreciation for the job that they do each day. It is their skills that should stand out, not what they wear.
