Every business needs more. Whether it's a small new business or an established Inc. 500 company, or anything in between, they all need more market share, more outcome from the same resources, more connections, and obviously more sales as the ultimate goal.

The way to improve the business performance is to keep on top of everything. The team players need to update their knowledge and skills from time to time to keep up with the latest in their field, and the executives need to keep on top of the leadership game with all the possible means.

How businesses achieve that is varying widely, but there are usually two main routs to achieve this goal: executive coaching and development programs.

In a development program the participants attend a series of lectures in a classroom fashion. The information transfer is through the traditional teacher-student relationship and the student is evaluated at the end with a test to measure how much of the information has been received.

The drawback with development programs is that little of the information acquired through a development program sinks, and the majority just gets forgotten. Unless there is a way to apply this classroom education in real life business practices I would vote against the development programs.

Executive coaching, on the other hand, is one of the unique methods of enhancing the performance of an executive and his team. The executive coach works on a one-on-one basis with the executive on the job. This makes the skills acquired through this training sink deeper than any classroom program.

Executive coaching is not only for executives. The coaching involves the leaders and the team members because it's one of the goals for an executive coach to enhance the performance of the trainee at all levels, including how to lead the team to achieve the most.

A development program could be the way to go in some particular cases, but for the most part I would vote for an executive coaching program. A certified executive coach is trained on helping executives and their teams on achieving more together in the real life work environment.
