Anybody can start an exercise program that's the easy part. Sticking to it on a regular basis is what many of us have trouble with.
It's like when you buy a new piece of clothing that cute summer dress or trendy pair of jeans jumps to the front of the rotation right away. But as with most things in life, the novelty wears off eventually, and the new item ends up at the back of your wardrobe later on.
The same thing happens when you begin a new exercise program or class. The first few weeks are fresh and exciting exercise feels fun, which is a great motivator. A lot of people are able to work out three times a week or even more.
But after a while, the shine fades away and exercise becomes boring and repetitive. Your fitness boot camp, weight training routine, or Pilates class is no longer enough to get you out of bed in the mornings.
So how do you stay motivated? Variety is the key. Give yourself an event to work towards to keep concentrated on your objectives, in addition to reinforcing the benefits of being active. Visualize and socialize when you workout! (Sounds like Drenched, right?)
Here are some tips to help you reach your fitness goals and keep boredom at bay:
* Keep your desired results in mind. If you have to, write them down on a sheet of paper and put it up where you can always see it.
* Train with friends, family members, or even your dog! Make exercise a social event.
* Record your progress. Weight loss or fitness gains will keep you going.
* Change training methods, activities, and equipment. Your muscles adapt quickly to the type of exercise you do, so vary exercise to make them work harder and get the results you want faster.
* Don't confine your workouts to the gym. Realize that you can exercise anywhere and anytime.
* Incorporate movement into your routine. Reserve a few hours each week for yourself.
* Challenge yourself. You might be surprised at what you can do.
