Explaining How The Primary Eating Disorders Come About
Being on a diet does not mean you have one of the many eating disorders that exist
. If you have any one of the disorders then you are suffering from an illness that is brought about due to a number of emotional triggers. It will effect every area of your life and those close to you for its duration. Your self-esteem will is likely to be at an all time low.
One of the most common is Anorexia Nervosa, which is a Greek term that stands for 'a lack of desire to eat'. An individual suffering from this condition has an abnormal obsession with being fat. They will be meticulous about counting calories petrified of losing control of themselves and giving in to the urge to eat. Low self esteem also means some sufferers of this condition believe that they do not deserve the pleasure that comes along with eating.
Bulimia Nervosa is different from Anorexia Nervosa in that the suffers of this condition seek out food and binge eat then rid themselves of the food by means of purging, either by taking laxatives or by making themselves vomit. Someone with Bulimia will often be secretive and stash food away to eat when they are able to be alone, the nature of their illness means their weight tends to yo-yo a lot.
Compulsive Eating Disorder is another similar but different illness. In this condition the sufferers are classed as having an addiction to food and using it as a means to close themselves off from their worries and the outside world.
Suffers are usually very overweight and do not purge. The constant eating which momentarily feels good followed by feelings of guilt and then by feelings of self-loathing repeat themselves in a never-ending cycle with this illness.
The last of these common disorders ( there are many more but here we are looking at the primary ones ) is Binge Eating Disorder. Binge eating is closely linked to both Bulimia and Compulsive Eating Disorder. The frequency in which the binge eating is done is less than with Compulsive Eating Disorder and the quantity of food consumed is different also.
Binge eaters will gorge themselves until they are uncomfortably full but they will not purge. Binge eating is often used as a form of self-punishment linked to low self-esteem and self worth. The binge eater is more likely to be of normal weight or slightly overweight than the compulsive eater because the binging isn't as frequent as the compulsive eaters.
