Explaining Laser Hair Removal
We are all tired of spending our precious time shaving
, waxing, and plucking. The time for change has finally come, with laser hair removal.
Discounts, usually offered by certain spas and salons, are not everything. Because different people's skins act differently to laser therapy, it is best to consult a dermatologist or plastic surgeon beforehand.
This is particularly true of darker skin or skin that is darker than usual due to sun exposure. Skin type has everything to do with effectiveness, and negative effects have shown up more often on darker and tanned skin.
Laser therapy was designed to work on any part of the body desired, including the face, back, shoulders, arms, legs and bikini area. For laser therapy to be effective, lasers must destroy hair follicles under the skin during their growth phase.
Hair strands co-exist in different phases of the cycle, thereby providing the explanation for why four to ten treatments, at four- to six-week intervals, are required, though this depends on hair type and target area. With fair skin and dark coarse hair, fewer treatments are necessary.
After 90% of hair follicles have been destroyed, the treatment is considered a success. You only need to go back once every few years to finally be rid of the other 10%.
In some cases hair does grow back, but these are far thinner and are barely noticeable. There are ways even to combat fine facial hair, as it was mentioned earlier that laser therapy is most effective on dark, coarse hair. With a prescription cream that slows the growth of facial hair, fewer laser treatments are needed to eliminate facial hair, as found by the American Academy of Dermatology.
A rubber band snap is how people have described the feeling of laser hair removal. Of course, the doctor will determine the best anesthetic technique to counter this, whether it be chilling the area or using a topical anesthetic. Side effects usually arise from applying topical anesthetic to too wide an area, thus underscoring the need to have laser therapy done by a dermatologist or plastic surgeon.
Treatments range from minuets to hours, as needed by the size of the area. The range of potential cost per target area is $200 per treatment up to $1,200 for the whole series. You will be given directions you need to follow before and after treatment.
Tanning, including self tanners, is prohibited one month prior to treatment. When it comes to tweezing, waxing, and electrolysis, these are also prohibited.
This is because the follicle must have a hair strand that serves as a target for the laser. Shaving is the sole method permitted one day before, because a sliver is hair is left in the follicle.
Your skin will be sensitive post-treatment, and you should avoid the sun's rays. Sunscreen of at least SPF30 should be used whenever going outside.
