Explore Berlin For Free

Berlin, the capital city of Germany, has had a harsh history of division

, exile and war, yet has now developed into a young, thriving modern city. People in Berlin are renowned for being friendly and laid back, and despite the remnants of harder times still dotted around the city, Berlin has taken its background and formed something altogether more welcoming. This pretty city is also full of free things to see and do, many of them incorporating important historical sites and events, but there is still a great sense of creative culture here, visible in its many art galleries. Take your pick of free things to do when visiting this friendly capital. If you're looking for great deals on flights and places to stay, be sure to browse the Hotels4U website.

One of the best free activities to kick-start your visit to Berlin is a walking tour. There are many options available, and while some will incur a fee, the majority of walking tour companies offer free tours, usually covering the main sites to give you a taster of their services. This is an excellent way to not only learn a little about the city, but to get your bearings. From Checkpoint Charlie to Museum Island, you can gain some history from people who live and work in the city, and take note of places you might like to come back to and see in more detail. You'll discover sites you might have otherwise been unaware of, such as the site of Hitler's underground bunker, which now lies unmarked, beneath a car park. Most hotels will have details of the various walking tour companies in the city.

One of the buildings you might likely encounter on your walking tour is the Reichstag; Germany's parliament building. This building is quite striking, in that its own foundations were rebuilt with a glass dome in the centre. You can climb the dome for free, although you do need to book your place in advance; do this before you go to ensure a chance to do the walk.

Next door you'll find the Brandenburg Gate, one of the most iconic sites of Berlin. This is free to see, standing where it is at the end of Unter den Linden, the grand boulevard, marking the change from East to West Berlin. Most walking tours will start here, as it's an easy-to-find meeting point, but if not, be sure to come back to it and get some photos.
