Explore The Temple Of Karnak

While some people say that there is little to see in Al Karnak

, the fact is, there is one site that will give you a rich experience that you do not want to miss. Although there are several other attractions here, the Temple of Karnak is the main attraction. This is indeed the historical site that the highest numbers of visitors go to after the Pyramids of Giza.

This is the largest complex of temples in the whole world, and it stands as a hallmark of the great skill of the ancient artists. Located in Al-Karnak village along the banks of river Nile, the complex is about two and a half kilometers away from Luxor.

The complex is made up of three major temples, relatively smaller enclosed temples and several outer temples that are about half a kilometer away.

The site was originally known as Ipet-isut, which means 'the most sacred places'.

Construction of the entire Temple of Karnak complex took about 1,300 years. Its three main temples are respectively known as Amun, Montu and Mut. Very thick brick walls enclose the temples. Situated at the center of the complex is the Temple of Amun, with the Temple of Montu located towards it northern side. The Temple of Ptah is enclosed within the walls close to the Temple of Montu. The remaining main Temple of Mut is towards the south of the Temple of Amun.

The temple area of the complex is an expansive space that can easily swallow two local villages. The Temple of Amun is the only one that visitors are allowed to explore among the three main temples. It is this reason that makes the Temple of Karnak complex referred to as the 'Precinct of Amon-Re' in some quarters.

Although there are many other temples in the country, a number of things set this temple complex apart. One of its unique features is the duration that it took under construction. Its construction was initiated in the 16th century BC. About 30 different pharaohs reigned during the time of its construction, and all of them influenced its structural formation.

In the main Temple of Amun is enclosed another Pylon of Karnak that King Ramses II built during his rule. The Temple of Amun has a hypostyle hall that goes beyond the second Pylon of Karnak. This hall is another thing that sets the complex apart. Its wonderful architectural design is regarded as a special masterpiece in the whole world.

There are various scenes of battle on the outer walls of this great hall. At the far end of the hypostyle hall is another that is called the Transverse Hall. This is where you will find the remnants of the earliest portions of the Karnak Temple complex that still exist. The oldest section of the complex, however, is the sanctuary, which is also known as the 'Holy of Holies'.

As you can see, the complex of temples is enough to make Al-Karnak a special tourist destination.
