Exploring Breathtaking Natural Terrain In Hong Kongs Kwo Chau Islands

Scattered across the deep blue ocean east of Hong Kong lies the 29 island collective that is known as the Kwo Chau Islands or Ninepin Island

. Also dubbed Fruit Island for its aerial view which resembles a hearty fruit bowl, the three main islands of the group appear as ninepins when viewed from the air, earning it its other nickname Ninepin. Comprising of North Ninepin Island (Hok Tsai Pai, Sai Mei Chau islets), East Ninepin Island (Lung Shuen Pai, Shue Long Chau, Tuen Chau Mei islets) and South Ninepin Island (Tai Chau Mei, Tai Chau, Lai Chi Pai, Ta Long Pai islets) and other smaller islets, the Kwo Chau Islands have long been considered a divers paradise although its unique topography has also made it a frequented tourist hotspot.

The most spectacular sights on the island consist of its breathtaking rock formations which date back to a massive volcanic eruption over 140 million years ago. Spewing forth a whopping 70 cubic kilometres of volcanic embers (larger than the volcanic ash produced by Mount St. Helens and Indonesias Krakatau volcano combined) the landscapes of the Ninepin Islands burst at the seams creating a series of rugged peaks and wide plains in the process. Highlights on touring the islands include a trip to the monumental Tiger Mouth Cave on South Ninepin Island where the colossal sea arch crafted by natures own loving hands stands its ground as it has for centuries. Reputed as one of the finest caves on the eastern shores of Hong Kong, guests can stand beneath the rocky arch in awe of its inspiring shape and scale.

The mountainous trail towards Nam Yue Tau also has its fair share of natural arches formed in rock with the crystal clean ocean to the east. Other must-see points of interest include the Tin Hau Temple which was constructed by grateful fishermen centuries ago. Visitors can also view the major plant varieties that inhabit the terrain which mainly consist of Screw Pines and Beach Naupakas. When sailing across from South Ninepin Island to North Ninepin Island, visitors get a stunning view of the hexagonal volcanic rock that adorns South Ninepin Island. Spectacular with its uniformly hexagonal crevices and joints, the rocks colourful surface has been created due to years of climatic activities which brought colourful minerals to the rocks surface from deep within the earth.
