Exploring The Cradle Of Humankind
There is a place in South Africa called The Cradle of Humankind
, and just as its name suggests, it is supposedly where the first human beings were to have roamed. Fossils of early man have been found around these parts and subsequently museums honoring these findings have been put up over the years. Visiting The Cradle of Humankind is quite a lovely experience, and one that will undoubtedly have you pondering the meaning of life and how we all got here!
Aside from the world famous museum displaying the fossils and information about the apparent first human remains ever found, there is much more to this World Heritage site that can be explored! A trip out to the Cradle of Humankind is always worth the journey, firstly because it is not really that far out of Johannesburg as it is! A half an hour drive will take you to this place that feels as if you stepped back in time.
A trip to the museum, called Maropeng, will give you a lovely day's worth of fun. You will learn things you probably didn't know, have an experience you didn't think existed, and will have a higher appreciation for the area you are visiting. There are also beautiful restaurants where you can fill your belly, sitting back and pondering all that you have just discovered. The beauty of the area should not be overlooked either, as remember you will be dining in exquisite surroundings. You will see rolling mountains far in the distance, wide open spaces and lots of rocky areas which seem to hide secrets of the past!
Because of all the nature surrounding the area, there is a lot to do in The Cradle of Humankind. Firstly, there is also an amazing lion and rhino nature reserve, that brings the experience of a game reserve right on the doorstep of Johannesburg. In this reserve, you will be able to go and take a drive and undoubtedly see all the wildlife they have on offer, from lions and rhinos and elephants to many types of buck. Included in the fee of this reserve, you will be able to see precious white lions, tigers from India and other exotic animals.
There are lots of offerings for the adventurer in the surrounding area as well. You can do a range of adventure sports including white water rafting in the nearby river, some abseiling down cliff faces, rock climbing, hiking and horse riding, amongst other things. It is also nice that you can find some great camping and holidaying sites in the area, so that you will have more time to explore all that the Cradle of Humankind has to offer. There is something about seeing the sky full of stars at night in this majestic place that makes you feel as close to earth as you could ever be!
It is not hard to see why the Cradle of Humankind is such a famous and precious place. There is a good reason why it is a World Heritage site and is definitely somewhere that everyone has to explore at some point in their lives.
