Exploring Uganda's Geography
Uganda is a landlocked country that harbors a lot of history
. It's famed for the Indians who had once inhabited the country before post independence. They were later to be chased away by the then ruling Dictator Idi Amin Dada. The country came to the light recently when the movie The Last King of Scotland' based on a book by the president's personal doctor was shot there and went on to win an Oscar for the actors. The movie highlights the life of Ugandans just after gaining independence from the Britain in 1962.
Uganda is located on the East African Plateau that rises 1,100 metres above sea level. The country is sloppy and famous for the many hills found around the capital city, Kampala. The country offers vintage points to observe the Sudanese Plains that lie to the north. The country lies within the Nile River Basin. The largest river in Africa River Nile and known in the country as Victoria Nile cuts across the country. A lake known as Lake Kyoga serves as the country's boundary between major communities i.e. the Bantus and the Nilotes.
Uganda has different languages spoken by communities situated around the rural areas. They can be distinguished through clothing, physical characteristics and different cultural activities that differ slightly from the others. 84% of the Ugandans are Christians with the rest percentage being taken up by the Muslims. The country was once ruled by kingdoms before colonization. The most distinguishing kingdoms include Buganda, Ankole, Busoga, Bunyoro, Toro and other smaller groups. Kingdom of the Buganda still exists and it's a major attraction in the country.
