Exploring the Amazon: River cruise or Jungle Lodge?
Staying in a jungle lodge usually means guests will see more diverse wildlife and more of it
. Most of the day is spent on tours where guests really get to see the Amazon jungle up close. Iquitos has plenty of jungle lodges as well, but one of the benefits to staying in a lodge is that you can explore the southern Amazon which is closer to Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley and therefore very convenient for people visiting the Cusco area as well. The southern Peruvian Amazon has more biodiversity and is less explored than the northern Amazon. Manu boasts the most diversity of all the regions and is a great place to spot jaguars, caiman, monkeys, sloths, and thousands of insects and birds. Puerto Maldonado however is considered one of the best places in the world to see the clay-licks which attract hundreds of macaws and parrots as well as tapirs.
