Export of Malaysia timber poised for recovery in 2010

Emerging Markets Direct (EMD) released their latest Malaysia Timber Industry Report 1H2011. The global financial crisis slows the timber industry in Malaysia. In 2009, the timber industry had experienced its worst performance ever over the last six years, export decreased 14.48% as compared with 2008. The year also saw the first double digit decline in the growth rate of export receipts of timber products since 2001. Having said that, the demand from major markets is picking up in 2010, especially from traditional markets such as the U.S. and the European Union, export of timber and timber products are expected to flourish in line with the global economic recovery.

In the Malaysia timber industry, more than 3,900 mills are in operation out of which 80% of the companies are small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The production of all types of timber products declined as demand was severely hit by the global financial crisis. Total production of the timber industry dropped from 25.83 in 2008 to 22.96 million cubic metres in 2009. Global demand for Malaysian logs and sawn timber recorded the lowest contractions, down 8.52% and 12.32% respectively. As the largest exporter of tropical logs, plywood, veneer and mouldings, Malaysia saw a 14.48% y-o-y drop in export earnings of timber products in 2009. Domestically, consumption for timber products dropped from 18.6 million cubic metres in 2007 to 15.52 million cubic metres in 2008.

The timber industry is indispensable to the economic development of Malaysia and vital to the economic returns to the country. Facing stiff challenges posed by Chinese downstream timber products, substitution of softwood logs for tropical hardwood logs and anti-dumping duties leveraged on Malaysian plywood in Korea, the Malaysian government aims to transform the timber industry into the manufacture of high value-added products and services and poised to achieve export earnings of RM 53.0 billion per year by 2020, majority derived from wooden and composite furniture products, engineered wood and panel products.

To stimulate the growth of timber industry, attractive packages with short-term and long-term fiscal incentives and tax exemptions for new and additional investments has been offered. Moreover, The Malaysia Timber Council together with the Malaysian Timber Industry Board, the Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation and the Timber Association of Sabah are in full force to promote the use of Malaysian timber products.
